INTERNATIONAL LETTER

The Work of Evangelism - Mark 16:15-20
Lito E. Batoon
The last words of a person are often his most important. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he gave his disciples a final charge – the Great Commission. This was not a suggestion, nor was it directed to a select few. It was, and still is, a command for every believer in Christ. Evangelism is not optional; it is the heartbeat of Christianity. Without it, the Gospel message stops with us – but through it, the saving power of Christ continues to reach the lost.

We Are Workers for the Lord
Jesus said, ‘Go into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature’ (Mark 16:15). Our mission begins at home, then extends outward—to our province, our nation, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). Truly, ‘the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few’ (Matthew 9:37).

A living example of this truth can be found in Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Twenty years after a congregation was planted in Culaylay, San Jose City, attendance had dwindled until only one faithful soul remained. Yet by God’s grace, renewed evangelistic effort began in August 2021. Through patient sowing, personal invitations, and persistent teaching, worship was restored and hearts once again responded to the Gospel.
Today, after three and a half years, the congregation averages around 70 adults and young people in attendance. That is what it means to work for Jesus – meeting people where they are, sharing His Word, and letting Christ’s light shine through us (Matthew 5:16).

We Seek Obedience to the Gospel
Faithful evangelism does not end with sharing the message; it calls for obedience to the Gospel. Daily seeking (Luke 19:10), reaching (Matthew 9:38), and teaching (Acts 5:42) bring powerful results for the church and community.

In January 2022, the Culaylay congregation began worshiping in a small house while constructing a new multi-purpose hall. Later, they moved into the new facility as the chapel continued to rise – made possible through a generous $30,000 contribution from the Wynnum congregation in Queensland. The chapel now accommodates 60–70 people for worship and study. Years of planning, planting, persevering, and praying have borne fruit, proving that God blesses faithful labour.

Paul wrote, ‘For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake’ (2 Corinthians 4:5). Evangelism is not merely sharing information—it is calling people to obey the Gospel. Jesus declared, ‘He who believes and is baptized shall be saved’ (Mark 16:16).

Like seed falling on different soils (Matthew 13), the Gospel meets hearts that are hardened, shallow, or distracted—but also those that are receptive and fruitful. Our duty is to sow faithfully and trust God for the increase. When hearts obey from sincere faith through repentance, confession, and baptism (Acts 2:38; Romans 10:9–10), lives are transformed, congregations are strengthened, and heaven itself rejoices (Luke 15:7).

We Rely on God’s Power
In the early church, miracles confirmed the Word. Today, God’s power is revealed through the Gospel itself – ‘for it is the power of God to salvation’ (Romans 1:16). Our confidence does not rest in human wisdom or eloquence, but in the living and active Word of God (Hebrews 4:12).

Evangelism succeeds not because of human skill, but because God works through His Word. We plant, others water, but God gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6). Lasting fruit grows only when we depend on him, not ourselves.

God’s power and provision have sustained the work in Culaylay. By his grace a chapel, a children’s room, a baptistry, a library, and a multi-purpose hall now serve the congregation. Truly, ‘with God all things are possible’ (Matthew 19:26).

We Keep Working with the Lord
Jesus promised, ‘Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world’ (Matthew 28:20). Evangelism is never a lonely task – it is a partnership with God. As the apostles went forth, ‘the Lord worked with them’ (Mark 16:20).

Even when mocked, rejected, or opposed, we can press forward confidently, knowing that the Lord stands beside us. At present, three dedicated workers in Culaylay preach, teach, and minister daily to the sick and needy. We are deeply thankful for the generous hearts and helping hands who share in this mission of seeking the lost and strengthening the saved.

A Sacred Calling
The work of evangelism is not merely one ministry among many – it is the very mission of the church. It calls us to labor for Christ, to call others to obedience, to rely on God’s power, and to keep working faithfully with the Lord beside us.

After completing my studies at the Memphis School of Preaching, my prayer and plan is to help establish at least one new congregation each year in Nueva Ecija. The province has a population of 2.3 million, yet fewer than 500 Christians. Of its 32 cities and municipalities, only 12 have congregations of the Lord’s church. My dream is to help plant new congregations and strengthen existing ones so the Gospel may reach countless more souls in this vast harvest field.

Souls are perishing without Christ. Evangelism is not optional – it is our sacred calling. When we speak, God works. When we persevere, we will one day rejoice to see souls in heaven because we did not grow weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9).

Let us rise up and take seriously the work of evangelism. Souls are waiting. Heaven is watching. And the Lord Himself is working with us. The question remains: Will you be a worker in God’s harvest today?
